169 hurt on skifields

A total of 169 people have come to grief on southern skifields in the seven weeks since the first skifield opened for the season in the second week of June.

St John Southern Lakes district operations manager Pauline Buchanan said yesterday 115 injured skiers and boarders had been taken off the Remarkables and Coronet Peak skifields and 54 from Cardrona, Treble Cone and the Snow Park.

She was not aware there was anything unusual about the number or type of injuries being dealt with.

The two Queenstown fields are operated by NZSki Ltd and chief executive James Coddington said the difference in the number of injuries between Queenstown and Wanaka reflected the difference in the number of skiers using the two areas.
