Estimated $15,000 damage was thought to have been caused by the fire that broke out in a linen supply depot in Queenstown on Thursday morning.

Part of the Valet Service premises, in Gorge Rd, was gutted by the blaze that took about 14 Queenstown and Frankton firefighters to extinguish. The other part of the building was damaged by smoke and water.

Alsco NZ chief executive Tony Colenso, of Auckland, said yesterday he was grateful no-one was injured in the fire.

He was waiting for a official report from the Fire Service on the cause and to hear from the landlord about the insurance situation.

Mr Colenso was also expecting a report on what happened from the manager of the Queenstown depot on Monday.

However, it was "business as usual" in the meantime - clients had not experienced a disruption to their service.

Fire investigator Mike Cahill, of Invercargill, said a bag of towelling left for four days beside a night store heater was the probably cause of the fire.

Mr Colenso said the firm wanted to continue to operate from the building. However, it depended on the landlord. Sprinkler systems were installed in all Alsco NZ-owned buildings, but he could not say for sure what fire prevention facilities were in the leased Gorge Rd premises.

Alternative premises had been offered in Queenstown, but that proposal would be detailed in the manager's report, he said.
