Milford and Fiordland escaped building and infrastructure damage after a series of earthquakes of up to 5.2 in magnitude shook the region yesterday morning.
Milford Sound Development Authority operations manager Matthew Reeves, of Milford, confirmed yesterday there was no reported damage to the township's structures and essential services, specifically electricity, water and sewerage.
''Hundreds'' of earthquakes occurred in the region every year, Mr Reeves said.
However, because the latest series and another series about five days ago happened during daylight hours, people were more aware of them, and as the shakes were shallow, they were more audible.
Te Anau police were not made aware of any cases of earthquake damage in the area yesterday. Fire brigades were not called to emergencies around the times of the earthquakes.
GeoNet recorded a magnitude-5.2 earthquake 10km northeast of Milford Sound at 7.41am. The quake was 6km deep and was deemed to be of ''severe'' intensity.
The jolt was followed by four smaller earthquakes in the same area, including two magnitude-3.4 quakes at 7.45am and 7.46am.
A magnitude-3 quake was also reported in the area at 7.55am and a ''moderate'' quake measuring magnitude 4 was recorded at 7.59am.
Another shake, originally measuring 4.7, was reported in the same area at 8.14am.
