However, the Otago Regional Council hopes to find a solution as soon as possible.
The extension to the restriction was issued by the Bus and Coach Association on behalf of bus operators, after concerns were raised by the association about the headlights on some bus models being partly obscured by bikes loaded on bus racks.
ORC transport implementation lead Julian Phillips said the partial obscuring of headlights might make buses non-compliant with road rules.
The ORC’s restrictions were in line with actions by other transport operators around New Zealand following a safety notice from NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA).
Mr Phillips said the decision was not made lightly.
"Cycling and public transport go hand-in-hand for many of our passengers and we’re committed to a solution that ensures safe, seamless travel.
"This temporary pause prioritises safety as we work closely with NZTA and our operators to understand these potential compliance issues.
"Safety is central to our service and we appreciate everyone’s patience as we await clarity from NZTA and work towards a safe, long-term solution."
He said the council understood the significant impacts the restrictions would have on the community and thanked customers for their continued understanding "as we navigate this additional restriction".
The timeframe for setting the criteria and testing was unknown at present. — APL
