Dunedin singer Tahu Mackenzie performed before a crowd about 500 at the inaugural Waitati Music Festival on Saturday.

The 10-hour event was such a success the organisers were already planning to repeat it, one of the organisers, Katie Bourne, said yesterday.

"It was a fabulous day. Even though we had four seasons in one day, the weather held off and the music was great.

"Next year we want something bigger and better, and not on the same day as the [Dunedin] Thieves' Alley market." Musicians and entertainers donated their time to the community event, with proceeds going to Waitati School and Blueskin Playcentre.

About $900 was raised from gate-takings and more money was still to come in from food stalls run by local groups, Ms Bourne said.
