The North Otago Women’s Club celebrated its 100th anniversary on Saturday.

A luncheon was held at the Brydone Hotel for its 43 members to commemorate the occasion.

Sister clubs from Dunedin and Timaru also attended.

Former club president Jill Steenson gave a speech detailing the history of the club.

Its choir also performed.

Historical documents and keepsakes were on display.

The club was formed in 1924 by Mr and Mrs J.M. Forrester and Mr and Mrs R.A. McDowell to recognise women and their talents.

The founders and their husbands first met on the London Bridge and hatched a plan to start the women’s club when they got home.

They began with 200 members and formed "circle-groups", president Anne Stewart said.

These included civic, play-reading, gardening and music groups.

"One of the first things ever purchased by the club was a piano."

The club had "changed considerably".

It had become more about social connection.

"As the years have gone on, many of our members live alone.

"The club provides opportunities for social interaction and to meet and greet.

"We have a club meeting once a month, a ‘Ladies Who Lunch’ group, coffee gatherings and we have a mahjong group, who play twice a month."

Of note, the Forrester Gallery was named after Mr Forrester, whose bequest helped establish an art gallery in his hometown.
