Miles Anderson describes his first year as the MP for Waitaki as a "wild ride".

"It’s certainly been a lot to learn and more to learn.

"Only seems like yesterday that we were campaigning so time has flown by.

"I’m really enjoying it and it’s certainly a privilege to be in the position that I am."

He said the first year had been a successful one for this government.

"There’s obviously more to do, but yes all things considered it has definitely been.

"There’s numerous mini achievements."

Mr Anderson was pleased to see their work to fulfil an election promise to bring down inflation beginning to work.

Inflation was at 5.6% in September 2023, just before National took office.

The latest official figure from June 2024 was 3.3% according to the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.

Next up on the agenda was replacing the Resource Management Act (RMA), Mr Anderson said.

"That’s the big ticket item ... The RMA impacts on every part of everybody’s lives, whether they realise it or not."

On a local level, supporting the farming community was a top priority, Mr Anderson said.

"Particularly in the sheep industry, there’s just not a lot of confidence there at the moment.

"I’m pretty concerned about the long-term future of the industry if the current conditions continue."

New trade agreements with Southeast Asian countries would be beneficial to the rural sector, Mr Anderson said.

"Eighty-one percent of our overseas earnings come from the primary sector, so it’s a big thing for New Zealand."

The Fast Track Approvals Bill coupled with replacing the RMA would address consenting issues that plagued farmers, he said.

The government also hoped to change district planning and regional land and water planning frameworks that had become "excessively restrictive".

The health sector remained an ongoing challenge as well, Mr Anderson said.
