On the footpath behind the cars witnesses from vehicles are interviewed by police.
Senior Constable Stew Hewitt said an 85-year-old Oamaru woman was running
across the northbound lane crossing on Thames St towards the kerb against the lights about 10.30am when she slipped. She was taken to Oamaru Hospital and suffered a sore back in the fall but had no other injuries.
''She was very lucky not to be hit by a car,'' he said.
Cars were coming from Thames St into the northbound lane.
One of the drivers said he did not see the woman until his car was virtually on her, despite going slow because of low sunlight in his eyes. That was compounded by shadows across the road.
Initially, it was thought the woman had been struck by a car, but when interviewed by police she said that was not so, Snr Const Hewitt said.
