Week left for voting in by-election

With just seven days left for residents in Waihemo to cast their vote in the Waihemo Community Board by-election, about 1000 people are still to vote.

Waikouaiti farmer Geoffrey Foote and Palmerston businessman Stephen Wesselingh are contesting the seat, which was left vacant following the resignation of second-term member Diane Curtis.

Waitaki District Council electoral officer Debbi Miall said there had so far been a "pretty good turnout" from voters.

"We have just over a 40% return at the moment, with just over 700 voting papers."

Mrs Miall said voting closed at noon on September 7, but if anyone had not received voting documents they could still register as aratepayer elector up to September 6.

She said there were 1725 people on the Waihemo Community Board electoral roll.
