A temporary museum building will be set up in Palmerston for three months.

The Waihemo Heritage Trust has arranged to use the Dalgrae building on Sanday St, next to the Palmerston railway station, for a museum display of historical items from around the district, Waihemo Heritage Trust chairman Chris Cox, of Palmerston, said.

It was hoped that a display could be set up before Christmas, he said.

A display of some of the railway history of Palmerston might be set up for a "rail week", Mr Cox said.

This would be another attraction for visitors to Palmerston on the Seasider trains twice a week from Dunedin.

In the longer term, the Waihemo Heritage trust would like to purchase a building for a museum in Palmerston, Mr Cox said.

Palmerston historian and archivist Trevor Ross had gathered a lot of historical material over a 50-year period.

Some of this material would be copied and displayed. An archive and small storage area has already been set up in the athenaeum building in the Palmerston town centre. It was hoped to secure the services of experienced museum developer David Wilson as co-ordinator for the Palmerston project.

Mr Wilson recently helped to develop the Kurow museum.
