Views sought at expo on landslips

Moeraki residents will have a chance to give their views on, and experience with, landslips in the town at a public expo being organised by the Waitaki District Council on September 7.

This follows a final report by consultants Tonkin and Taylor looking at land stabilisation in the coastal town.

Council assets group manager Neil Jorgensen said the report, available on the council's website, gave an overview to guide decision-making in the future.

The next step was for the council, in conjunction with residents and property owners in Moeraki, to come up with a plan to resolve land-stabilisation issues.

It is a problem that has existed for thousands of years.

It came to a head in 2010 when heavy rain caused slips and damaged buildings and infrastructure. Earthquake Commission New Zealand funded an investigation into how that affected the town.

Information from that investigation was used in the Tonkin and Taylor report, which has collated existing hazard data and fieldwork to produce a hazard map rating areas of Moeraki according to danger from slips and associated damage.

Mr Jorgensen said the Tonkin and Taylor report did not say how to resolve the issues.

The meeting on September 7 would be the first step in that, involving local people.

The council wanted to gather residents' knowledge of slips, stormwater drainage, springs and other relevant issues, as well as their views on how to resolve the problems.

The council wanted to identify areas needing urgent action and what was best value for money in attending to them.

It would also need to include building and land-use strategies and controls.

The council hoped to finish that process by the middle of next year.
