Bad weather has delayed the reopening of Ouse St, which has been closed for about 16 weeks while contractors working for the Waitaki District Council replaced water and sewerage mains.
The street, which Waitaki Girls' High School had requested remain closed for safety reasons because it splits the school's campus, was supposed to reopen last week.
It is the main route to the Derwent St and Reservoir Rd residential areas.
Council assets group manager Neil Jorgensen said recent poor weather, including snow at the end of July, had delayed resealing the street.
"The gravel layer in the road needs to have just the right amount of moisture to achieve the right compaction. If the compaction is not at the right standard, then there is a high risk the asphalt surface can slump or break," he said.
The council has received more than 700 submissions on the proposal to close the street permanently, an issue that has been raised twice since 1974.
A report on the submissions will go to the council meeting on August 23.
