Street to close for filming

Harbour St in Oamaru's historic area will close for part of next week to film the movie Mister Pip, despite three objections from businesses.

The application to the Waitaki District Council to close the street from Tuesday to Saturday next week, depending on the weather, came from Mr Pip Ltd, which is filming an adaptation of Lloyd Jones' bestselling book of the same name. Harbour St was chosen to represent Victorian London scenes.

Council assets group manager Neil Jorgensen said three objections to the closure were received by the council, but the council had agreed to close the road and sent the objections to the Oamaru Whitestone Civic Trust, to liaise with the film company and mitigate adverse effects as far as possible.

"The filming will generate a significant amount of money for the community initially, and will be great publicity for Oamaru long term," trust chairman Phil Hope said.
