Cricket is a career option, but it needs a lot of hard work, was one message former Black Caps captain Stephen Fleming gave to young North Otago cricketers yesterday.

Fleming was in Oamaru as an ambassador of L. J. Hooker, addressing an early morning business breakfast and then meeting about 40 young players, parents and cricket officials.

The young players asked questions ranging from his favourite grounds to play on - Trent Bridge, in Nottingham ranked first, followed closely by Lancaster Park (now AMI Stadium) - through to the best moments in his career and his most disliked players - Chris Cairns, Adam Parore and Matthew Hayden were in the list.

But, Fleming added quickly, in the end he found ways to play with them all.

The Indian Premier League had injected millions of dollars into cricket and made cricket a career option, but his advice was young players needed to learn to play the game first.

There was a tendency to take players into top class cricket in New Zealand before they were ready.

He encouraged the young cricketers firstly to have fun but also to do it with purpose.
