Steampunk sculptures installed

The town of Oamaru is dressing itself up and keeping itself clean for an influx of visitors it is hoped will stay in the Waitaki district during the Rugby World Cup.

This week, Steampunk sculptures are being put in lower Thames St to start a two-month programme of activities aimed at both locals and visitors.

At the same time, the Waitaki District Council has put in place plans for roading, cleaning, public toilets, litter collection and even civil defence, to cope with increased visitor numbers during the Rugby World Cup.

Putting Steampunk sculptures back into lower Thames St was the "icing on the cake" for Oamaru to encourage visitors to spend time in the town and district, Tourism Waitaki Real Festival co-ordinator Jan Kennedy said.

"It is important to have the Steampunk sculptures on display. They are a huge drawcard to get people down into the Victorian precinct."

Steampunk Journey of Discovery maps had been printed to help people find the sculptures, and 110 packs of Rugby World Cup bunting had been sold from the i-Site to Oamaru businesses and retailers.
