SPCA seeking help to move

North Otago SPCA is seeking support from the community to enable it to move into much-needed new premises.

Vetlife Oamaru offered the SPCA a building, next to its premises on the corner of Thames and Torridge Sts, to house a shelter after the Stuart St premises failed a RNZSPCA inspection.

SPCA president Aveley Gameson said the branch needed to move within the next three months.

Half the Stuart St shelter had been shut down because it was leaking badly and it was in a "disgusting state of repair", Mrs Gameson said.

She believed it had become a health and safety issue and it was not a good environment for the volunteers or the animals.

The branch comprised a dedicated group of animal lovers who were committed to improving welfare standards and the branch's services in North Otago.

Unfortunately, they lacked the expertise in building, planning, plumbing and electrical work that was required for the fit-out of a new facility, she said.

While plans had been drawn up, the services of a project manager were required.

"We would be most grateful to hear from anyone with project management experience, builders, plumbers, electricians and business leaders that may be able to donate a few hours of their time to assist us.

"It is hoped that the end result is a facility the community as a whole can be proud of," Mrs Gameson said.

It was envisaged a community meeting would be held to further progress the branch's plans.
