Otago SPCA is set to extend its weekend opening hours as its kitten population ''explodes''.
SPCA Otago executive officer Sophie McSkimming said the Opoho animal shelter would be open between 10am and 3pm on Saturdays and Sundays from next month.
The extra three hours each day would make it easier for people to meet the animals, she said.
There were plenty of animals at the shelter, including more than 200 cats - mostly kittens - for adoption.
''Our cat population has just exploded in the last two weeks.''
SPCA Otago animal manager Grace Hepburn said the growing kitten population had resulted in the shelter desperately needing more fosterers, volunteers and newspaper donations.
