Five white crosses which appeared in the centre of Oamaru yesterday were a sobering reminder of road deaths involving young people in Waitaki in the past five years.

The crosses were placed by members of Students Against Driving Drunk as part of Sadd week activities.

The group also gathered about 7am yesterday to make chalk drawings on the pavement promoting the anti-drink-driving message.

Awards have been made to Sergeant Tony Woodbridge, Senior Constable Ross Lory and retired police sergeant Derek Beveridge, who is now Project Turnaround co-ordinator, for their work with helping young people in the district.

Ben Fox, of Waitaki Boys' High School, Ben van Til (St Kevin's College) and Nicky Wallace (Waitaki Girl's High School) were also recognised for their efforts as sober drivers.
