One person is in Dunedin Hospital and five others are in Oamaru Hospital after a series of crashes yesterday.
A man was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital in a serious condition after he was discovered unconscious in a car by fishermen near a road south of Kakanui about 10am.
Police said it appeared the vehicle rolled down a 5m bank near a layby overnight.
Sergeant Tony Woodbridge, of Oamaru, said police would not name the Kakanui man injured, believed to be in his 60s, until all family members had been informed.
A St John spokesman said the man had serious injuries.
The Serious Crash Unit from Dunedin was investigating.
About 11am, emergency services responded to a multiple-car crash at the intersection of Weaver St and Thames Highway.
Sergeant Blair Wilkinson, of Oamaru, said a vehicle crashed into another vehicle waiting at the intersection, causing it to hit a parked vehicle.
Sgt Wilkinson said the first vehicle then came to a stop against a commercial building.
A St John spokesman said five people were transported to Oamaru Hospital by ambulance.
One man received serious injuries and the other four people suffered minor and moderate injuries, the spokesman said. Waimate and Mackenzie police sub area supervisor Mike van der Heyden said a truck driver had to take evasive action to avoid colliding with another truck in Serpentine Valley Rd just before 1pm yesterday.
The truck spun into the side of a concrete culvert.
"We had one truck force another truck off the road.''
There were no injuries.
Emergency services were called to a single-vehicle crash at Oamaru's Countdown Supermarket about 3pm.
Sgt Wilkinson said the vehicle hit a wall of the store, causing minor damage to the car and the building.
The occupant of the vehicle was uninjured.
St Andrews Constable Craig Hedges said a Mitsubishi SUV travelling south collided with a Honda Integra at the intersection of State Highway 1 and Lower Hook Rd, about 4km south of Makikihi, about 1pm.
Both vehicles were travelling south.
There were no injuries. Police inquiries were continuing.
