Bacon and egg pie? Check.
The humble pie is what heralds the opening weekend of the annual duck-shooting season for Oamaru father and daughter team Barry Gibb (58) and Jessie Knight (27).
The two converged on their traditional family mai mai at Devils Bridge wetlands on Saturday armed with pie and shotguns to take on two days of shooting paradise and mallard ducks. The duo has hunted since Mrs Knight was about 4.
"Wherever Dad went, I had to go.
"It's very interesting. We have a lot of laughs sitting in the mai mai.''
She said duck shooting gave hunters an adrenaline rush.
"It's quite exciting when you have a group of 10 parries [paradise ducks] coming in at you. They don't have very big brains. It's very exciting. They just fly at you.''
She said mallards were a harder duck to hit given their natural cunning.
Mrs Knight said what she got out of hunting was the chance of adventure in different parts of the country and important bonding time with her father.
Mr Gibb said hunters new to the sport needed to follow the advice of their older peers, go shooting with a more experienced hunter, be safe with firearms, and if they did shoot an animal and it survived, they need to shoot it again in a humane fashion and not leave it to suffer.
"When you're a lot younger, it's about killing things, but when you're older it's about enjoying the time out there.''
