Gareth Taylor, from Ahaura, near Greymouth, has been appointed principal of the 123-pupil Palmerston Primary School.
Mr Taylor was chosen for the position from 15 "strong applications", board of trustees chairman Johnny Bell, of Shag Valley, said.
Previously principal of Awahono School, in the Grey Valley, Mr Taylor will start at Palmerston at the beginning of term one.
He succeeds Dan Dilkes, who has resigned for personal reasons.
Meanwhile, a Lions Club golf tournament at the Ardleigh golf course near Palmerston last Sunday raised $1500 for the Palmerston Primary School's home and school association. The money will be used for a variety of purposes including the school's sports co-ordinator, the operation of the school pool and providing sports equipment, association president Tania Bell said.
Last year, the home and school association helped fund a sixth teacher at the school, Mrs Bell said, but a possible lower starting roll this year meant that funding might not be required.
The tournament attracted 58 golfers.
