School bus speed warning

Motorists who ignore the 20kmh speed limit for passing parked school buses have been put on notice, after Waitaki Police said they would continue to monitor driving behaviour.

Efforts to introduce flashing speed-limit signs on Oamaru school buses began last month when concerns over vehicles driving at excessive speed past stationary school buses were raised by an Oamaru school bus operator, and although the signs have not yet been approved for use, Senior Sergeant Jason McCoy said further concerns had now been raised across the district.

Snr Sgt McCoy said a two-week-long police operation to target driving behaviour, which began on Monday, could be extended.

Infringement notices and fines would be handed out to anyone was caught speeding.

''Due to the concerns raised by the community in relation to the speed of motorists passing school buses stopped to allow children off and on the bus the Waitaki police are running an operation targeting this behaviour.

''The operation will run for the first two weeks of term three of the school year and, depending on behaviour of motorists during this time, may be extended. The higher the speed, the higher the fine.''
