After reading about an 80-year-old Oamaru woman who was conned into handing over cash to alleged scam artists, Lisa Carter decided to find a way to raise funds for victims of elder abuse.

She and a small team of volunteers have recruited help from several North Otago businesses and have started collecting donations to host a garage sale this weekend.

All the money raised will be donated to Age Concern Waitaki.

The story of one woman "tugged at my heartstrings'' but she was eager to help any victim of elder abuse.

Mrs Carter said the Oamaru community had shown it cared by its generous response to her appeal for help.

Senior Constable Bruce Dow, of Oamaru, said the victim and her family were "incredibly grateful and moved'' by the initiative but would rather the money was donated to other elderly victims.

He said the amount of money the pair were alleged to have fraudulently taken from the woman was probably "four figures'' and said fraud was taken seriously by police, who would "pull out all the stops'' to put an end to the offending.

He confirmed police were investigating the incident.

Mrs Carter and garage sale co-organiser Christene Fridd have been sorting through donations that have started to fill the corner of the warehouse at the corner of Nen and Humber Sts where the garage sale will be held.

The group had collected 51 pairs of children's shoes, many children's toys, jigsaw puzzles, gardening and "blokes''' tools, kitchen appliances, a washing machine, a sewing machine, a BMX bike, a number of cookbooks and more.

There would be a cake stall on site this weekend.

A spokeswoman for Age Concern Waitaki said the advocacy group would use any money donated from the sale to help victims of elder abuse and neglect.

The garage sale will be open from 9am to 4pm tomorrow, and from 10am to 3pm on Sunday.
