Safety tips during stop

About 50 trucks were pulled over at Waitaki Bridge on State Highway 1 on Wednesday night - for a good cause.

They received safety advice with a hot drink at the temporary truck stop organised by the Police commercial vehicle investigation unit, New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), ACC and Road Transport Agency.

NZTA Otago-Southland regional director Bruce Richards said the purpose was to create a relaxed environment where truck drivers could talk about issues relating to operating a safe and compliant vehicle.

Fatigue - a real safety issue for truck drivers - was also discussed, including recognising tiredness, the impact it had on driving and practical tips on managing it effectively.

The thrust was on education and advice, not enforcement.

The "Education Stop" operation was similar to others held in the Southern region in recent years, Mr Richards said.
