Keeping safe was the key message to more than 300 primary school pupils this week.

The annual Waitaki "Clued Up Kids" programme was held at the Waitaki Community Recreation Centre on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Year 6 pupils from 17 different schools came from as far south as Hampden and as far north as Omarama to take part.

The aim was to teach them how to keep themselves safe in a range of real-life scenarios.

This year, Clued Up Kids featured 11 different stations run by various community groups.

These covered a range of topics such as confidence and safety around guns, quad-bikes and road safety as well as what to do in a fire and an earthquake and how to give CPR.

A new aspect this year was Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand educating the children on dental care, particularly around the effects sugar has on your teeth.

Event organiser Fiona Stratford said the key messaging was simple.

"We want them to be clued-up and know how to react in emergency or dangerous situations.

"They can also take those messages home to their family and just to keep themselves safe."

The interactive nature was ideal for the age group of pupils attending, Mrs Stratford said.

She was grateful to all the sponsors and volunteers who helped make the event happen each year.
