A "small" roundabout could be a solution to increasing safety concerns at the Wansbeck St-Tyne St intersection in Oamaru's harbour area.

At Tuesday's assets committee meeting, after another minor crash at the intersection at the weekend, Waitaki Deputy Mayor Melanie Tavendale highlighted Waitaki residents' growing anecdotal evidence of crashes at the intersection.

Waitaki District Council roading manager Michael Voss said there were "a whole range of things" the council was looking at, and while it was an "off the top of the head" comment he made in response to Cr Tavendale's question about the council's understanding of the safety issues at the intersection, he said he liked the idea of a roundabout.

"That may not be practical if you're getting truck and trailer units".

Speed cushions, changing the priority of the intersection, and realigning parking were also under evaluation.

"This town's got a bad history for roundabouts," Mr Voss said.

In 2009, Oamaru had its first traffic lights installed at an intersection. It was one in a set of five as the town instituted a new traffic plan.

In part, safety concerns about former roundabouts at Eden and Ribble Sts had prompted the change.
