Omarama people will get a say on how they would like the town's Memorial Hall developed into a community centre.
The town already has about $192,000 from the sale of the Omarama Medical Centre to go towards the project.
Ahuriri Community Board chairman Craig Dawson said the aim was to upgrade the hall, relocate some services there and turn it into a community centre so it is used more.
Some of the ideas which have already been proposed are putting the medical centre, community library (at present at Omarama School), civil defence headquarters, information centre and other services there, retaining the existing playgroup centre and Plunket group.
A draft plan showing how the hall could be redeveloped had already been prepared.
However, before planning gets under way, a public meeting will be held in the hall on August 29, starting at 10am, to get a reaction as to what the community wants.
The meeting will consider drawing up a constitution to set up an organisation to raise more funds for the redevelopment.
The Waitaki District Council's property manager, Dougall MacIntyre, said the community understood the sale of the medical centre, which was owned by the council, would go towards the hall project.
The hall site would need to be reclassified as a local purpose reserve to allow a community centre to be developed.
That would need public consultation and the approval of the Department of Conservation, although Mr MacIntyre expected permission would be granted.
