Pupils 'see' ill effects

Pupils from St Kevin's College this week donned "beer goggles" to experience the debilitating effects of alcohol, as part of an anti-drink-driving campaign.

Waitaki District Council Road Safety co-ordinator Elton Crane visited year 12 pupils at the school, and gave a lesson incorporating an educational DVD revealing the dangers of drinking alcohol before driving.

Mr Crane said the pupils then had to wear "fatal-vision goggles" that mimicked the effects of alcohol on vision.

"The goggles allow students to experience a realistic simulation of impairment, as they walk towards a vehicle, step inside, put on the safety belt and put the key in the ignition. This simple task is intended to demonstrate how even basic skills are severely diminished when impaired.

"I always explain that the goggles only affect vision, whereas alcohol has an effect on all of the senses."
