Pupils from five schools around Oamaru and Weston this week came up with some eye-catching ideas to encourage classmates to walk or cycle to school.
The schoolchildren were celebrating "Fancy Feet and Wacky Wheels" Day on Wednesday, dressing up their feet, bikes, scooters and skates to travel to school in style.
Pembroke, Oamaru North, Fenwick, Weston and St Joseph's Schools took part in the initiative, organised by Sport Waitaki's Kate Cartwright and Waitaki road safety co-ordinator Elton Crane.
Mr Crane said initiatives such as this were an ideal opportunity to have fun with active transport and celebrate walking and wheeling to school.
"With the current popularity of scooters, it is important children are shown how to use them safely.
"A reminder to completely dismount the scooter before crossing the street would be the main precaution I would like students to learn," he said.
The five schools involved had a variety of prizes and giveaways for those involved. The winning classes were Room 9 at Fenwick, Room 7/8 at Oamaru North, Room Totara at St Joseph's, Room 6 at Pembroke and Room 2 at Weston.
