Public say on transfer station will count

The views of the public on using a Chelmer St site for a rubbish transfer station will be taken into account when the Waitaki District Council seeks Resource Management Act approval for the project.

The council held a public meeting on Wednesday to outline its proposal to designate a site in Chelmer St next to the Waitaki Resource Recovery Park for a transfer station.

Council assets group manager Neil Jorgensen said the Chelmer St site was one of the options being considered for a transfer station site.

A station would be needed when the Oamaru landfill was full.

Mr Jorgensen emphasised the council had yet to make a formal decision on the location.

About 20 people attended the meeting, including residents who live near the Chelmer St site.

Some, particularly those living close to the site, opposed the plan and suggested other sites.

Concerns were raised about the effect a transfer station would have on Chelmer St - particularly an increase in traffic with the Oamaru Public Gardens and a holiday park close by.

Other issues aired included noise, dust and odours.

Mr Jorgensen said some people favoured any transfer station in Chelmer St being enclosed.

The next step in the process will be to consider the issues raised as the council prepares a request to designate the site for a transfer station.

Details of other locations considered will be included.

The council hopes to lodge an application late next month.

The council will publicly notify the application, giving people another chance to make their views known through submissions.
