Police act on harassment

Police have been called in to quash online harassment among members of the Twizel community that has erupted over the Twizel Medical Centre.

Tension began in mid to late 2016,  after a GP was let go by the centre and then a group formed within Twizel which worked to get the GP back and the centre’s board thrown out.

Senior Constable Les Andrew, of Twizel, said in the past two weeks he had handed out several harassment notices to people to get them to stop their online harassment of others.

He would not say who said what or the context of the messages, but said peoples’ names and details were mentioned online.

The notices were laid under the Harmful Digital Communications Act.

He said the complainant in the matter had referred the Facebook posts to internet watchdog, NetSafe.
