Open day at fire-damaged house

An Oamaru house which was badly damaged in a fire, its occupant barely escaping in time, is being used as an open home next Saturday by the Oamaru Fire Brigade.

The aim is to teach valuable lessons about what a fire can do.

The house became engulfed in flames within minutes on the evening of August 9, the tennant managing to get out as fire spread rapidly.

The brigade hopes that by letting people see what fire had done to the house, it would make them more aware of dangers in their homes and the need for basic precautions, such as smoke alarms.

Firefighters will show people through the house, pointing out where the blaze started and how it spread into adjoining rooms.

There will be stickers around the house showing temperatures reached during the fire.

It is hoped that when people see what happened, and the damage, it will have an impact and raise awareness.
