The "No Regrets" Party Pack, two years in the making, is to help parents and adults run safe parties for young people.
Initially, it is available only in the Waitaki district, but the idea is expected to spread to other areas.
The pack was officially launched yesterday in a joint venture by the Waitaki District Council's Community Safety section, police, Students Against Drink Driving (Sadd) and Land Transport New Zealand.
Sadd gave its input into what the pack should contain.
"Parents know kids will have parties and drink, so the idea was to give help on how to control parties," Sadd member Jess Russell said.
Waitaki community safety officer Alison Banks said the pack provided parents and young people with information encouraging them to organise and enjoy a trouble-free party.
Parties could be fun, exciting and a great way for young people to relax and enjoy themselves, but could get out of hand and become unsafe.
"By being organised and following a few simple tips you can host a party that is enjoyable and safe," she said.
The party pack would be available from district libraries, police and, hopefully in the future, liquor outlets.
The pack has information such as:
• What parents need to know when planning a party for their teenagers.
• What young people need to know when planning a party with their friends.
• A police party registration form advising police of the party organiser and who should be there.
• A "party at your place" planner map that both the parents and teenagers could work through.
It shows who is coming and how they would be invited, whether alcohol is involved and how much, what other drinks and food would be available, the situation with alcohol brought in by other teenagers and how to get rid of gatecrashers.
