Police are investigating a 'suspicious' fire on the side of an Oamaru road this morning.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand were called to the scene at the corner of Reed and Derwent Sts at 5.59am.
A Fenz spokesman said a crew from Oamaru attended and found a small butane canister on the roadside.
Firefighters were there for about five minutes and the fire has been marked as suspicious, the spokesman said.
A police spokeswoman said inquiries are being made to determine the circumstances.
Meanwhile, a building thought to be ablaze north of Oamaru this morning turned out to be a small rubbish fire.
Oamaru crews were called to the property in Pukeuri-Oamaru Rd at 7.55am.
A spokesman said originally it was believed the building was on fire, but crews discovered a small rubbish fire at the back of the property.
Crews spoke to the owners before leaving the scene soon after.
