Oamaru murder trial date set

An Oamaru youth will stand trial in the High Court at Timaru from March 7, charged with the murder of a 16-year-old youth in Oamaru in April.

The trial date was set yesterday after a telephone conference between the High Court, Crown counsel and counsel for the defendant.

Further details will be settled in another telephone conference 20 days before the trial, which is expected to last about a week and a-half.

The male defendant, who was aged 16 years at the time of the offence, is charged with the murder of another male who died from stab wounds despite attempts by emergency services to revive him on the footpath in Exe St about 10pm on April 1.

So far, the defendant has appeared in the jurisdiction of the youth court, which means his name and the name of the victim are suppressed.
