Aiming for the first quarter of 2017, work at the rest stop area at the bridge would include "keep left" arrows marked on the road each side as a reminder for drivers entering and exiting, as well as trimming of vegetation. .
In regards to the NZTA strengthening programme of the 60-year-old bridge, contract details were still being worked through.
Senior network manager John Jarvis said investigations of the site already carried out were necessary to specify what the contract documents needed to include.
Once NZTA had the contract finalised, more information on what would be entailed would be released, Mr Jarvis said.
And once work began, it would be conducted in a way that there would be few delays for users of the State Highway 1 bridge.
The bridge was still safe to be used, he said.
