New parking meters coming soon

New parking meters are on the way for Oamaru's central business area and fees paid by those using cash will remain the same.

The new meters will also allow payment by text or credit card, which will attract a 50c transaction surcharge.

The Waitaki District Council last year budgeted $440,000 to replace the ageing pay-and-display meters in central Oamaru, as they were becoming increasingly difficult and expensive to maintain.

It accepted a price of $395,834 from Integrated Technology Solutions to start the work next month.

The council's roading manager, Michael Voss, said the company would supply and install 46 pay-and-display meters which would be more user-friendly and include options for cash, credit card and text payment.

Installation of the meters was expected to be completed by the end of June.
