Aisea Hopoate Havea (21) was sentenced to 300 hours' community work when he appeared before Judge John Macdonald in the Oamaru District Court on Wednesday, on a charge of sexual connection with a 15-year-old girl.
The offending happened between April 4 and June 30 last year.
• A 76-year-old Balclutha man charged with assault and intentionally defacing a car had both charges withdrawn and was placed on a good behaviour bond for six months to keep the peace, when he appeared before Judge McDonald in the Balclutha District Court on Tuesday.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Graeme Evans told the court Brian George Craig intentionally defaced a car belonging to Brent Andrew Horne on May 3, by writing an abusive message and a swear word on the car with a red marker pen.
Sgt Evans said Mr Horne watched Craig write on his car and then confronted him, at which time Craig took a boxing stance and punched Mr Horne on the chin.
Counsel Rhona Daysh told the court Craig was upset by Mr Horne's constantly parking his car under Craig's window, but he had not hit Mr Horne.
He had bad eyesight, caused by cataracts, was waiting for joint-replacement surgery and "was in no position to be hitting anyone".
Judge McDonald said he had considered convicting Craig and ordering him to come up for sentencing within six months if called on, but instead withdrew the intentional damage and assault charges and placed the 76-year-old man on a six-month good behaviour bond.
