Man to appear in court over two firearms incidents

A 25-year-old man will appear in the Timaru District Court today in connection with  two firearm-related incidents in the Timaru region on Sunday.

Canterbury police arrested the  man  about  9.45pm at a residential address in Orari, in Canterbury.

He is likely to face a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.  Police said they had not ruled out further charges.

It was still unknown last night where a 26-year-old Oamaru man was shot before he was dumped at  Timaru Hospital on Sunday.

The man arrived at the hospital with a gunshot wound to his thigh about 4.30pm.

A police spokeswoman said they were also looking into a report of a gun being fired at a house on Kennels Rd in Washdyke between 5.30pm and 6pm.

Two occupants who were home  were uninjured.

On Monday,  police advised Timaru Hospital staff to put the hospital into  lock-down at 3.30pm.

Yesterday the lock-down was lifted about 2.20pm, but a spokeswoman for South Canterbury District Health Board  said she could not say the lock-down order was in relation to the injured Oamaru man.

Police declined to  say whether they had interviewed the Oamaru man  or if they knew where he had been shot.

The hospital board spokeswoman said she could not say if the man had been discharged because he requested privacy.
