Whitestone Model Rail Group has added local flair to its model train display.
The outer ring of its multi-track display has been modelled after Oamaru, with local business and landmarks being recreated as scale models.
Whitestone Model Rail Group president Warren Crawford said since it buys most of its models from overseas, group members have to custom-make labels and signs for displays to give them a New Zealand touch.
It was one of, if not the biggest, model train displays in the South Island.
Mr Crawford said the custom-made models for the specially created outer Oamaru ring will bring interest for the whole family in the form of recognisable landmarks as the toy train models chug along.
Some of its models are over 60 years old.
Having created this mini-world, the group is altruistic with the money it receives.
The not-for-profit organisation shunts all the money it raises from its entry fee to local charities.
But they are running out of space to expand the displays further, founding member Eric O’Brien said.
"We can’t really add much because we don’t have much space."
What they do have is a table set up for younger children to have a look at and they also host school visits.
Mr Crawford said the group is always looking for new members, particularly younger people and all are welcome.
The display is open on Sundays and most public holidays.
