A toss of a coin decided who would be elected to the Omarama School board of trustees after two candidates tied in votes for the last place.
Seven people stood for the four-member board, and filling three vacancies was clear-cut. Nathan Smith topped the poll with 30 votes, Brett O'Sullivan was on 26 and Jan Thomas on 24.
But the last position was a tie on 17 votes each between Craig Dawson and Dan Thomas.
Election returning officer Megan Talarico said the returning officer's handbook said when the vote was tied, the final position had to be filled by lot, such as tossing a coin, drawing straws or pulling a name out of a hat. That had to be done in the presence of two trustees from the existing board or two staff members, if board members were not available.
Last week, Mr Thomas was elected by the toss of a coin in the presence of acting principal Daryl Aim and former board trustee Andrew Sutherland.
