After representing the Corriedale ward on the Waitaki District Council since he was elected in 2010, Mr Keeling yesterday resigned from the council with ''immediate effect''.
He said his resignation was due to family reasons - he had carefully considered the responsibilities of his role as a councillor alongside his work and family commitments before making his decision.
''I have not taken this decision lightly. Unfortunately, circumstances preclude me continuing my involvement with the organisation. I regret having to make this decision and apologise for any inconvenience it creates, but with what I can see ahead with my work and family commitments, I really have no choice.''
Waitaki Mayor Alex Familton said Mr Keeling had made ''major contributions'' as the council representative on the Lower Waitaki South Coastal Canterbury Zone Committee and the Youth Council.
''We hope he returns when his active schedule allows. His potential as a community leader is outstanding.''
At its next meeting on February 26, the council would discuss how to proceed without Mr Keeling, Mr Familton said.
With less than 12 months until the next local body elections, the council may continue without filling the vacancy left by Mr Keeling. It could also choose to appoint a member, as outlined in the Local Electoral Act 2001.
