IPCA to assess four complaints

Complaints about  police action taken in the aftermath of a Twizel Medical Centre employment matter late last year are being assessed by the Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA).

Last year,  GP Dr Tim Gardner left the practice for undisclosed reasons.

His departure  sparked community protests and complaints about the centre and its management.

In late December and possibly early January the Twizel police acted on complaints received about comments made online in a community Facebook group. They issued harassment notices requiring the recipients to stop their online harassment of others.

The IPCA has confirmed it is assessing four complaints about Twizel police issuing the notices, which were laid under the Harmful Digital Communications Act.

Senior Constable Les Andrew, of Twizel, would not say who said what or the context of the messages, but said people’s names and details were mentioned online.

A police spokeswoman said a complaint was made to police about the Twizel police’s actions, but a full police investigation was not carried out as the issue was mediated between all parties and was resolved.
