Director, Dr Paul Trotman, and a film crew will document events in the hospital throughout the year, as part of a programme focusing on the New Zealand health system, and Dr Trotman said the compact nature of the Oamaru facility made for a perfect setting.
"It is a really good representation of the whole health system.
"There are a lot of services for a small hospital and a lot of separate services in a small area."
Dr Trotman said he had also been impressed with the dedication of the Oamaru doctors and nurses.
"What we have found so far is that it is the people that make the system work.
"It is about going that extra mile - to make sure the patient gets the care they need."
The fact he worked in the hospital before leaving six years ago, also meant the staff were happy to be filmed, he said.
The documentary would be filmed in blocks throughout the year, during the hospital's busiest periods, he said.
