Local volunteers had worked to establish a trail since the Moeraki Area Promotions and Development Group was awarded a $6000 Lotteries grant in 2003, and promotions and development group secretary Patsy Johnston said the trail, which would take in 16 sites of historic note, had now been completed.
''It starts at the old Hampden Hotel, and the last one is Murcott's butchery.''
Mrs Johnston said the trail would also take in the area's three churches, the Hampden cemetery and war memorial, and the former home of pioneering surgeon and founder of the Australasian College of Surgeons Sir Louis Edward Barnett.
Waitaki Mayor Alex Familton paid tribute to residents who had donated their own time to complete the long-term project.
''It is again one of those projects where volunteers have been the essential ingredient.
''It has been a very interesting project; it involves a very unique part of our district. It will be a very relaxing and well-developed green area and a very pleasant walk, and an area of focus for our heritage.''
