Up to 25 volunteers have been helping pick grapes in the Waitaki Valley, their efforts boosting New Zealand Spinal Trust funds by an estimated $5000.

This is the third year the Ostler wine company, which has vineyards at Duntroon and Lake Waitaki and a contract grower near Kurow, has run the scheme with volunteers joining contract pickers to get in the harvest.

Ostler's Jim Jerram said the annual harvest was becoming a social event, with people and members of the trust travelling from as far away as Christchurch to help raise funds for spinal injury victims.

"It's also been important this year with people suffering spinal injuries in the [February] Christchurch quake," Mr Jerram said.

The project began in 2008 in conjunction with Duntroon man Andrew Pickles, who was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident in 2004. He spent five and a-half months in Burwood Hospital and is in a wheelchair.

This year, picking started towards the end of April and has just been completed.

"Community support and good humour has always prevailed; people come to pick and have fun," Mr Jerram said.

The amount picked by volunteers is estimated from the tonnage from each block. The money - less expenses - is given to the trust. Mr Jerram estimated it would be about $5000 this year.
