Yesterday, the seven children were each presented with a personalised illustrated dictionary, courtesy of the Rotary Club of Oamaru.
The project was initiated in North Otago after club members saw the success of a similar community effort by Rotary clubs in Invercargill and South Canterbury, past-president Helen Webster said.
The club believed it was a "delightful and tangible" way of helping to fulfil the Rotary International goal of literacy development of young people.
The initial distribution of about 200 dictionaries were now in the hands of year 4 pupils throughout North Otago.
It is a three-year project, with dictionaries being delivered in term three for the next two years.
The project was funded with some of the proceeds from the club's successful bookarama.
