About 40 children scrambled over the landmark rocks to find tokens redeemable for items such as books and fossil discovery kits.
The treasure hunt was organised by the Vanished World Centre as part of its open week.
Treasure hunt co-ordinator Ian Elliott was pleased with the turnout.
"Today’s all about encouraging people to come to Vanished World Trail."
Oamaru’s Tayne Curry (8) enjoyed being able to clamber all over the rocks.
When he grew up he wanted to be an adventurer, so he could find "crystals and stuff".
Robbie said his favourite explorer was Sir David Attenborough.
