FPP system retained for local body elections

The Waitaki District Council and Oamaru Licensing Trust will continue to use the first-past-the-post system for its local body elections in October next year, with no-one demanding they change.

Both bodies decided last year they wanted to continue with that system, but it was open for public comment before a final decision was made.

Both authorities have used the system since local body reforms in 1989, despite in recent elections having had a choice.

Electors had a right to petition for a poll to countermand the decision, which must be signed by at least 5% of the number of electors entitled to vote at the previous election.

That would require 673 valid signatures in the case of the trust and 781 in the case of the council.

Neither the council nor the trust received a petition calling for a poll by the deadline of Tuesday so the first-past-the-post system will continue.

The other system which could have been used was the single transferable vote (STV).
