Four at workshop

Only four prospective candidates for Waitaki local body elections turned up for a workshop to inform them of what to expect if they stand and are then elected.

While Waitaki electoral officer Debbi Miall was disappointed with the turnout on Tuesday night, she may run workshops again at future elections, but with more advertising and promotion, and asking people to indicate if they would attend.

''Running these can be expensive and time-consuming,'' she said.

The workshop was the idea of Waitaki deputy mayor Jim Hopkins, after he learnt of a local authority in Australia running them. The proposal was supported by the council.

While the turnout was small, she said people found it helpful and some did not realise the work that was involved.

No-one indicated whether it had persuaded them to stand or not.

Because Waitaki Mayor Alex Familton is seeking re-election, Waimate Mayor John Coles, who is not standing again, and Waitaki councillor Gus Young outlined what was required of councillors.

It also covered the election process, requirements for candidates, and what as involved in being an elected member.

Mrs Miall said becoming an elected member gave people a direct influence on decision-making and put them in a position to help shape the future of the district.

''Being an effective councillor takes time and commitment, but it is also an interesting and rewarding way to contribute to our community,'' she said.
